People who get paid the most seem to work the least

It seems that the CEO’s, Directors, and board members of the corporate world get paid very handsomely; able to afford fancy cars and private school fees, but they don’t seem to do much work other than make a few decisions from time to time. Maybe it’s the reward for what they have done in the past or maybe it’s a bit of luck but the lions share of work seems to be done at the lower end of the ladder and it really does not seem fair.

I wouldn’t say no to a position like that in the future myself though so I guess it’s just a fact of life that we all need to strive for the top…

A good way to get your Resume up to scratch

I was thinking the other day that there are not too many people (companies / websites and so on) offering sound CV advice. Yes there are many pages of information on CV writing etc on recruitment websites in the UAE amongst others but correct me if I am wrong – does any of the info actually help you at the end of the day or does it make you more anxious and clueless?

From my experience there are no hard and fast rules about the content and length of a CV; just creating it in the best possible form including as much concise information about YOU that will help sell YOU to the recruiting manager. There comes a time when you have to stop asking peoples opinions and just go for it using the best possible version of your curriculum vitae that you have. It is good though to get your CV checked by a friend / family member as well as a business professional, like a colleague (but only if people know you are moving on! ;-)) or a business professional contact that you might have through one form or another.

You may disagree with the above and also, I am fully aware that I have not told you how to write your CV either so you maybe wondering why you are reading this??

Well I will tell you why. RecruitGulf.com offers a great service to jobseekers in the Gulf. CLICK HERE to get excellent Resume advice.

Jobs losses in Dubai spark fears of more to come

Employees at City 7, a Dubai-based English TV channel, fear they may loose their jobs as company bosses evaluate the viability of the station.

If you find your self in this situation you have got to act fast and see what other job opportunities in Dubai are out there. Register your resume now with RecruitGulf.com

Job cuts in the property business in Dubai

It seems that the once impregnable property giant that is Dubai is even feeling the heat of the global economic downturn. Gulf News reports:

The DAMAC Group has announced that it has undertaken a review of global staffing levels in response to the continuing current global slowdown.
The organisation, has announced that 200 jobs will be retrenched in total or about 2.5 per cent of global staff levels.

OK, OK, this does not affect workers in the Gulf directly it seems, so we should not panic, as this is really just precautionary as the company has to be sensible operating as an international business. The job cuts are seemingly going to be made on its enterprises abroad.

However, we should take note that if the rest of the world continues on this downturn there will have to begin a pull on resources in Dubai and the Gulf.

Bahrain MPs do not deserve such a huge retirement package

We all want a good retirement to be comfortable, but why should MPs in Bahrain particularly benefit from an extended scheme to see them receive a large payout? For one what have they contributed that merits their reward?

Workers, no matter what industry they are in deserve a good pension to live a comfortable retirement. This is unfortunately not always possible, however but if you have contributed a lot in your field and also been sensible at putting money away you should be entitled to a good pension and benefits.

MPs should not be granted any exemptions to this. They should have to contribute a worthy amount too, to receive benefits.

Geek or Unique?

Good afternoon computer users,

With Gitex, the biggest ICT event in the exhibition calendar taking place this week in Dubai, the whole city is gone IT mad!

More and more it is becoming socially acceptable to be an IT "geek". In fact 2008 could be Their year! Suddenly if you are not part on an online social network, or if you don't have the latest iPod or mobile or GPS in your car, you are not cool! Or am I totally off the mark here?? Everyday I see kids running around with mobile phones short of including the kitchen sink! Call me old fashioned, but in my day you just needed a pair of Levi’s to be cool. And, to make it even easier the older they were the better, so hand-me-downs were great! Lots of rips and wear and tear and you were hip to the hop! Good to go. These days you've got to have all the gadgets and gismos hanging out of you.

Really though, I think it is great that young people are so computer savvy. The old stereotype of a computer geek is long gone. In fact, many of the participants in Gitex are really enthusiastic about the region here and the ICT prospects that lie ahead. With so many young eager and bright people now relocating to Dubai, the plan is to create a reputation for Dubai as a Global Technology Hub!

With so many IT jobs on our site and IT clients, it is easy to see how this can very soon become a reality. For a listing of all the IT jobs on www.recruitgulf.com, be sure to log on and apply.

Best of luck, and get applying!! :)

Writers Block...

Good afternoon loyal readers,

I am struggling for an interesting topic of conversation today! I've opened the paper for inspiration and all I see are dollar signs and gloomy faces. Not at all inspiring! It's getting boring listening to stories of gloom and doom, don't you think?

So, instead of talking about something topical I am going to write about how much I enjoy living in Dubai. Slightly biased I know but I will try to keep it as honest as possible...

...I was about to start with bullet points but that would just be nerdy!

Ok, what I love about Dubai... I love the fact that it is hot and sunny every day of the year, (being Irish I think that will always be my number one!). I love that when the alarm clock goes off you don't have to worry about getting to the shower without freezing to death. I love the way that when you turn on the cold tap hot water comes out... (Don’t even bother turning on the hot tap between May and September!). I love that I don't have to buy boots or winter coats. I love that you can eat outside. I love the fact that everyone you meet in Dubai and speak to is working on really interesting projects. I love that everyday you meet more people who have just moved over. I love that everyone is from different places and speak different languages. I love that everyone has a different story to tell. I love the fact that the place is full of new and exciting developments. Everyday something bigger and better is announced. I love that petrol is cheap and I don’t pay tax. I love that there are Indian restaurants still selling delicious feasts of butter chicken for about 3 euro and that the same Indian Chefs offer a Chinese menu of biryani noodles!! I love that the Filipino restaurant by my house offers a Chinese menu. I love that I can spend my weekends by the sea and can rollerblade in the evenings along the beach. I love the Rugby 7's. I love the Dubai World Cup, and most of all, I love my job! :)

What do you love about living where you do? What do you like about your job? If you are struggling to answer these questions I suggest you log onto www.RecruitGulf.com asap and sort yourself out!! There are literally thousands of exciting jobs on offer right now!! Log on and move up.

Best wishes,

Am I living in a cocoon here in Dubai??

Hello!

All this talk about a global economic crisis is making me begin to wonder if I am living in some dream world here in Dubai!!?

I look out the window and all I can see for a miles radius is growth and prosperity! Are we completely shielded here in the Middle East from the economic down turn?! The obvious answer is no, however we are all guessing that the impact will be minimal and is not likely to take immediate effect. Every day more and more companies are coming to Dubai and contacting RecruitGulf.com to help them fill their vacancies. The region hosts a world of opportunity and is crying out for skilled professionals with experience to fill management positions in the Region.

Companies in Dubai no longer need to incentivise employees to relocate to the region since Dubai has become such a popular destination for expatriates. The advantage of living here being that amenities have improved and that the expat communities are now huge, making it a bit of home from home. Other parts of the Gulf however continue to offer bumper packages to those people who are willing and eager to be a part of something new. The lesser developed countries in the GCC including Oman and Qatar are becoming increasingly more attractive as plans and visions for large scale development and exciting projects get under way.

Overall ...(as a certain beverage company once said)... the Middle East is probably the best place in the world to work right now!

For more information on exciting opportunities out this way simply log onto www.RecruitGulf.com and find a job that allows you to be a part of something new.

Best wishes!

Would you take time off for a big event in Dubai?

Good morning!

Hope you all had a super Eid and managed to get away or chill out for a few days.

So big events... Dubai is full of them!! Last week it was Kylie tickets, this week it's the Dubai Cityscape and today The Dubai Rugby 7's tickets are on sale! But what if you work shifts or irregular hours and can't make the event or don't know yet if you can make it? Would it be worth taking a day off work?? What do you think?

I have friends who book time off for the Rugby 7's six months in advance to be sure they won't miss out on the banter. 3 days of sitting and dancing in the sun, green cans in hand, faces painted tri colours and herds of rugby players swarming the stadium....would you take time off?? I know I would! :)

Don't forget to buy your tickets today for the Rugby and book that time off work!

Eid Holidays

Hello once again!

Are you all looking forward to the Eid break?

After almost 30 days of fasting, the time has come to celebrate. Whether as a Muslim you abstained from all food and drink during these holy days, or a non-Muslim who went without water on your morning jog, I think you deserve a clap on the back. Congratulations and Eid Mubarak to all of you.

I am really looking forward to a camping trip in Oman, drive through the wadi's and bask in the Hatta pools. Eid is a time for relaxation and rejuvenation! It's a time for reflection on oneself and maybe even a time to think about a new job in Dubai or the UAE.

Enjoy your few days off work and maybe when you come back log on to RecruitGulf.com to see what exciting job opportunities are just around the corner!

Eid Mubarak to one and all,

Sharing Accomodation in Dubai?

Good morning my lovely Job seekers across the UAE!

I heard this morning on the radio that landlords have been given just 30 days to ensure that none of their tenants are illegally sharing accommodation. By illegally, it is meant that the residents of the apartment or house or villa are not family. (At least that is my understanding). While house prices continue to soar and until house supply can catch up with demand, it is possibly not the most practical enforcement of UAE law to date.

Many young singles move to Dubai for employment and have contributed to the massive growth and successful expansion of the whole region. The job opportunities in Dubai and across the GCC are what has been attractive to young ambitious professionals who want to be part of the change and the excitement. To now say that they can not share accommodation seems quite unfair. Having said that, we are in a Muslim country and we must respect the rules. Dubai is a city with a lot to offer and I think it is a small sacrifice to make in exchange for a tax free income, a life on the beach and sun shine 365! :)

So if you haven't made the move just yet....keep searching for your perfect job in Dubai, Abu Dhabi or a job anywhere across the GCC, on www.RecruitGulf.com

That's all from me,

If you have any thoughts comments or useful knowledge on this subject or anything else that has been covered since starting this RecruitGulf blog spot, please keep us all up to date. We would love to hear your views.

Have a lovely day!

Does the legalisation of car pooling make a difference to you getting to Work in Dubai?

Now that car pooling has been officially legalised in the UAE, I wonder how many people have actually signed up to use it!? In theory, it sounds great. With all the new salik tolls opening up all over Dubai, and with traffic congestion continuing to frustrate Dubai's residents, car pooling sounds like a great way to get to and from work each day. The only small problem, is that a car pooling permit is only granted once you can prove you will be transporting colleagues and not any one else. Not great really if you are working for a small organisation. On the whole though I congratulate the RTA (Road and Transport Authority) in the UAE on the decision and encourage all of you working residents in the UAE to take advantage of the car pooling. If you think car pooling will help you get to work in the mornings in Dubai, or for more information, check out www.rta.ae.

Drive safe and enjoy the last of the light traffic during the Ramadan hours!

Happy work and keep us all posted on any challenges facing you in work or issue you want to bring to the forum.

Do you know what visa you need for the UAE?

With all the new changes involved in the visa for entry in the UAE, it is no wonder some are left a bit confused!

Visit visas for individuals from the EU into the UAE is still free on entry, but now each visa stamp is only valid for 30 days rather than 60, as previously. On the plus side this means your family and friends visiting you won't outstay their welcome! :) But, on the otherhand if they are spoiling you rotten and you are really keen to have them extend their visit, there is the option of purchasing a visa extention for a mere 650 aed! The process, like so many things in Dubai, is interesting! It is not difficult, just beaurocratic. You would want to give yourself a couple of hours, as the Naturalisation Office (just beside thee Bur Dubai Police Station), is always manic and packed with people. (Ladies keep an eye out for the ladies queue, it is always much shorter!!)

To work in Dubai you will need a residency visa, and this will be provided by your employer, once you have sucessfully completed your medical test. Normally a residency visa is valid for 3 years, and without this visa you can not buy a car in the UAE.

Another way of getting a residency visa, is by purchasing a property in Dubai. However, you will not get access to this visa until completion of the building.

Visa's are an issue often discussed and asked about by people thinking of working here. At RecruitGulf.com we will soon have a section dedicated to answering all of these type of questions. In the meantime why not leave your thoughts and get this conversation started. Share your experiences and maybe you will be helping someone else who needs answers!

Breaks at work in the Gulf are a necessity

Reading an article on “midday breaks” at constructions sites implemented in July and August this year, got me to thinking that really all companies should install midday breaks into their working days. The Spanish do it very effectively with their siesta’s. It’s simply too hot in the middle of the day to concentrate and get work done, unless you are frozen cause your air conditioning is like the artic that is!

What do you reckon – should employers give us all an extended lunch time break over midday?

UAE students are reportedly to be offered bursaries to help improve academics. This is great news for the local community in the UAE and will help to ensure that the next generation can fill the skills gap in the UAE.

This initiative, which is also to offer volunteer projects, will be an excellent way of helping students to broaden their horizons and to get a job at the end of it. It will also help to encourage better social behaviour and keep students out of trouble.

Fake degrees means disciplinary measures for workers in the Gulf

Bahrain is leading the way in the Gulf for coming down heavily on employees guilty of sporting fake degrees to gain employment or promotion.

A lesson that should be learnt industry wide but particularly so as the Middle East experiences such employment growth.

UAE expat employees should not need an I.D. card!

What is the world coming to? Next we will have to get permission from the government to go on holiday let alone from our employers!

Yes I.D. cards may make us safer as a nation but what about passports? Has the government forgotten about them? Are I.D. cards not just another item that can be easily lost or stolen and that require a lot of admin to manage and replace?

I.D. cards give the criminals of this world another avenue to explore in seeking personal details on a nation.

The objective behind the cards is also unclear – is this the new form of work permit?

It’s a bit harsh to be told you have to have one or face deportation!

Recruiters are said to be under pressure also – if their employees do not have them then they could run in to legal difficulties.

Where do you stand on I.D. cards?

Its all about Jobs in Dubai

What more could you want? Warmer climes, an ever expanding economy, excellent quality of life and plenty of job prospects across all sectors. It really is the place to be.

The UAE is currently crying out for skilled employees. Companies are trying to build their image to set them apart from the rest and brand themselves as excellent places to work.

By introducing a supportive international culture, the chance for accelerated promotion, training, and increased benefits, such as flexible working hours - employers are really aiming to sell themselves to potential employees. A lot of companies are also offering transportation to work as another benefit.

However, the main concern for employees at the moment is the high rents in Dubai. Employers are being forced to offer compensation ahead of benefits by increasing salaries to combat the issue. The most important points for a potential employee are accommodation, education and salary.
